about

Lanterns is my first successful attempt at a cohesive, thematic set of songs. The first one, titled "Lanterns" resulted from an improv session where I played piano while imagining a lantern floating on a small, wooden boat in an ocean, being lightly tossed by waves.

I really enjoyed the initial melody, and I had some ideas for a second one that I laid down that same evening. Over the next several weeks, I started to think about the musical theme that had been growing in my mind, and I started to imagine a musically-connected "story" that could be told through a few songs.

The second song in Lanterns, "How Do I Light The Way", was initially paired with a song titled "Hold Me Over The Edge". In my original vision for Lanterns, I imagined a child wanting to lean over the edge of the boat and a father helping to hold the child over the edge so he could see and experience being further than he could have gone on his own. While I was trying to tie the theme down, I eventually landed (and settled) on the idea that the child would instead be wondering how he would light the way with the lantern (be it in a storm or other dark conditions). "How Do I Light the Way" is a song of hope and light, coupled with doubt and uncertainty.

The final song, "If The Ocean Swallows Me Whole", took longer to put together than the other two. After mostly finishing the first two songs, I hit a block and set the project aside for several weeks. At some point I had the idea, "What if this third song is about going through the storm and feeling like you're being pulled under?" And with that thought, I started to write something dark and dangerous - but at the very end, the way is lit.

The travelers in their small wooden boat (with their lantern) are able to make it through the gloom of the storm to the other side, where there's peace again.
